As a contemporary law enforcement agency, the Erie County Sheriff's Office has developed organizational policies and procedures to guide agency employees in their efforts to prevent crime and disorder and to ensure that individual civil liberties are protected.
The Clerk of Courts is responsible for filing, docketing, indexing and preserving all court pleadings for civil, felony criminal, domestic relations and a few other miscellaneous cases. The Clerk processes appeal cases from all lower courts in Erie County.
It is the second-smallest county in Ohio by land area after Lake County. The county is bordered on the north by Lake Erie; the opposite shore is made up of two counties in Ontario, Canada. It is drained by the Huron and Vermilion rivers.
ERIE COUNTY RECIEVES AUDITOR OF STATE AWARD WITH DISTINCTION FOR 2023 AUDIT. Rick Jeffrey Erie County Auditor, is pleased to announce that Erie County was awarded the Auditor of State Award with Distinction for Fiscal Year 2023. Keith Faber, Ohio Auditor of State presented the award.
There are over 30 historic sites and history museums in Erie County – ranging from the magnificent Glacial Grooves on Kelleys Island to the Firelands Historical Society, the oldest history museum in Ohio.
It was formed from parts of Sandusky and Huron counties, and it is named for the Erie, a tribe of Native Americans who lived along the south shore of Lake Erie until defeated and scattered by the Iroquois tribes in the 1600s. Including Kelleys Island, it is the second smallest of Ohio’s 88 counties in land area, only 252 square miles.
