Battlefield V is developed by DICE and produced by EA. This subreddit is ran by dedicated fans of the series and has no affiliation with EA or DICE. Battlefield 5 has more Steam players at peak than BF1 + BF2042 combined. I'm very happy BF1 has an increase in players though.

If you read the whole post, I even put in bold that these stats are unreliable, it was to display statistics from the BF series on steam, through the trackable players on steam charts. So the most radical answer to why bfv got so huge influx of player is because last 2042 free week and sale had increased the battlefield interest to a lot of people. So when 5(1, and 4 as well) went on sale, people bought it and give it another try. And if u look closely to which region has the most player and recent of sale of bfv. It was china.
Battlefield 5 is now on steam! Will be interesting to finally be able to get an idea of the population by checking the steam charts. (Obviously for the next game of the franchise as I doubt many people will actually buy BFs on steam now) 2 out of 5 screenshots are from BF1...
Reasons could be a lower price (on December/January it just cost 2€) or the EA game pass, where you pay 25€ per year or smth like that. I was stupid buying this game on steam via key instead directly via EA. But I also checked steam charts where Battlefield 2042 had more active players on steam than now.
