Natural Earth is a public domain map dataset available at 1:10m, 1:50m, and 1:110 million scales. Featuring tightly integrated vector and raster data, with Natural Earth you can make a variety of visually pleasing, well-crafted maps with cartography or GIS software.
We developed Natural Earth as a convenient resource for making custom maps. Unlike other map data intended for scientific analysis or military mapping, Natural Earth is designed to meet the needs of production cartographers using a variety of software applications.
Download all vector themes as SHP (576 mb), SQLite (423 mb), or GeoPackage (436 mb). Natural Earth is the creation of many volunteers and is supported by NACIS. It is free for use in any type of project. Full Terms of Use ».
Natural Earth features 7 types of raster files at 1:10 million-scale to suit your bandwidth and content focus. Two versions of the 10 million-scale raster data are offered: high resolution files at 21,600 x 10,800 pixels and low resolution at 16,200 x 8,100.
1:10m Physical Vectors. Download all 10m physical themes (49.99 MB) version 5.1.1. Files have been downloaded 2,125,487 times. NOTE: Version number indicates the update cycle when that theme was last updated. An older version number indicates updates have not been necessary since then.
Natural Earth shows de facto boundaries by default according to who controls the territory, versus de jure. Adjusted to taste which boundaries are shown, hidden, and how they are rendered using the fclass_* properties paired with the POV worldview polygons above.
Natural Earth II is a raster map dataset that portrays the world environment in an idealized manner with little human influence. Imagine the urban landscapes of New York, Paris, and Tokyo restored to temperate forest, southern Russia as the open steppe it once was, and the Amazon River basin covered with unbroken rainforest.
Natural Earth draws de facto boundaries according to our disputed boundaries policy. We also mark controversial boundaries as disputed, and show claim lines around disputed areas. Data is tagged to encourage remixing to match user’s particular needs and several premixed themes are available.
By removing self-intersections, sliver polygons, and adjusting offset polygons, Natural Earth imports into more GIS software (like PostGIS) and will be easier to maintain. The coastline is adjusted to better conform to ~1:3,000,000 satellite imagery.
1:10m Natural Earth I Satellite-derived land cover data and shaded relief presented with a light, natural palette suitable for making thematic and reference maps. Natural Earth I is available with ocean bottom data, or without.
